The Physical Chemistry of Surfaces group investigates the relationships between the structure and chemical composition of metal and alloy surfaces and the properties of metal/gas and metal/liquid interfaces, including the key role of surface oxide films. An integrated research approach is applied, combining experimental characterization and simulation of well-controlled model systems at nanometer and atomic scales for the understanding of macroscopic properties, with applications in the fields of materials and energy.

Research themes are:
- nanostructure and reactivity of metallic and oxidized surfaces,
- electrochemistry of surfaces and corrosion,
- bio-interfaces,
- modeling and simulation of surface structure and properties.

Surface analysis is a key aspect of our know how. Metal/gas and metal/liquid interfaces are characterized with up-to-date surface spectroscopies and microscopies including X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), scanning probe microscopies (STM, AFM), combined with electrochemical techniques.
